Venetian Masks pt2

It's another cat mask,but this time the style of the nose is more human like.
When I first saw this one I thought it was Indonesian batik,but if look closer,I think it might actually be tarot cards.
Got to love those feathers.Makes me think 'wise woman tribe leader' somehow.lol...
Think i should find out how to create those crackles.It was shown how to create crackles on wood in TV before but i forgot.1 layer paint 1 layer chemical,that's all I remember.
These ones look very oriental.
Casanova mask.I like the shape.

This one is prolly one of my favourites.The colour is very understated and it looks elegant.

At last I found out how Venetian masks are made.Sounds easy,and quite interesing.Here's the link

Introducing the new Scriptorium

I've created another blog to post my stories whenever I feel like it.Prolly won't be updated as often as this blog.But I guess it's something to encourage me to write more and make sure my creativity*cough* doesn't dry up.Looking back on when I was young,that creativity has dried up a lot though.

Here's the link: Criccy's Scriptorium

Argh!! Tomorrow have 2D animation class again.It's the 3rd time this week I'll be going for that class.And I still dunno what we are supposed to show Tan tomorrow.Currently I've finished my flying bird,although it's depressingly jerky.Working on my double take now.Feel sleepy though...but class is at 10am tomorow!! argh!!! So far only done the keyframes!!!

I've reached a conclusion.

I cannot animate and listen to music at the same time.

My left brain needs a quiet environment so it can tell my right brain what to do next.

Whee...downloaded Maya already,so don't need to stay back in college to do work.Yesterday I just went into the 3D lab for awhile and it was so cold.

Also,I finally understand how to use Flash

Sunday, May 25, 2008

I bought 'The Tragical Comedy or Tragical Comedy of Mr Punch' yesterday from Kinokuniya.I was in KL to take some shots for photography and so ngam the day before there was a 25% discount voucher printed in the Star.Somemore I didn't notice that voucher until i re read the newspaper the next morning.If you want the voucher,it's in the Worlds of Wonder section.Valid for a maximum of 2 comics,either American or Japanese comics.So after the discount,the book was RM46.10; quite worth it ,since it's full colour.And compare that to Tse Yein's Sandman comic which she bought for RM70 something.

There was a book fare at KLCC as well but I decided not to go because
1)I was very tired,woke up at 5 am to get morning sunlight photos
2)have to pay for entry.Yes,you have to pay to go in to buy their books.Selfish buggers...

Still feeling very stressed about college.I think it started from Flash animation class the other day.Perhaps I was too tired but I did not understand much about the class.Don't even know how to start.And then I saw the seniors work looks very nice,and some of our classmates also going to finish the assignment,but I still haven't started.I have to go for class again on Monday together with group 1 for sure.Another thing is that I don't feel as comfortable animating with a tablet as with pencil and paper.

Maybe it is compounded because I haven't started marker rendering either because I haven't bought thinner yet.I tried turpentine this morning but it didn't work.

And then Seamus makes me feel stupid when it comes to perspective.I plan to study perspective notes again either tomorrow or later after editing my photography shots.

For Maya,so far i think I'm still ok,except I haven't gotten a copy for myself yet.I'm going to try to do the assignment on Monday in the college lab.Hopefully I won't have any problems.Jason made it look easy anyway.

~~~~~~~
But on the other hand I keep on thinking whether or not i really really am interested in animation.If not,then maybe later when the software gets more and more complicated I might have a problem and wonder what am I doing in DG major.Last time Syed always asked us if we enjoyed doing 2d animation.For me it was only okok.The technical problems became less and less throughout the term,but it wasn't as if I was getting a big kick out of it.
Maybe it's still too early to tell.Meanwhile my parents just asked me to try my best since I already think that illustration will not provide good job opportunity or pay,so I just have to think about my future.
Maybe I'm still hoping to come to a happy compromise later in my working life,as a designer of some sort.But either way we all have to work our way up to that post,since people generally start out as lowly inbetweening animators.
But I realised that I generally can't handle stress well.Eventhough it's sort of only a small problem,I still manage to stress myself out so much that I cannot sleep.That's why these past few days I purposely tire myself out by doing reading or studying or personal art projects,before I go to sleep.Kind of like last time when I was a kid,I was so afraid of my class teacher that I was scared to go to school and cannot sleep,just kept sighing a lot and rolling about.It seems that academic performance anxiety is still something that I cannot get over with since young.
I know other people probably have bigger college problems than me.No hardware,software,technical advice,moral support from parents,monetary problem,language problems etc.That's why I think if I was an outstation student I will just die.I think I am not mature enough to study overseas or anything yet.
Venetian masks!!
This morning I was surfing the net and decided to check some out.I remember I saw one very nice one when I was in Australia.It was quite a huge mask,with a curly jester hat made out of opera paper and bells.
They don't come cheap though.Very elaborate ones made of quality materials can cost up to USD400.the simple ones that cover only the eyes are around USD30~40.The materials that they use are very beautiful though,and usually the ones with more material look nicer.Anything from feathers to lace,swarovski crystals,laser cut metal,cloth,leather,opera paper,textured paper,gold or silver leaf,bells,beads,tassles....you name it they have it.
Anyways,enjoy the eye candy.
This one is from the Cirque du Soliel,actually,I was having a look at their website and from there decided to look for Venetian masks.I remember Cirque du Soliel was in Singapore once.They performed Quidam.I remember the headless man with the umbrella.
The one I saw in Aussieland was something like this but more elaborate.Don't you just love the opera paper and jester hat?
A cat face version
One with laser cut metal decoration.Looks so romantic.
prolly one of my favourites.
Lush feathery piece.I have  2 blank Venetian masks at home,i was thinking of putting feathers on them too.
Another jester piece.
2 mask combination.It is meant to be worn.Dunno how though.
These last few are designed by Claudia Hapeman.This piece is called Shangri-la
Very light femenine looking piece.BTW,they sell masks for weddings too.
A very powerful looking piece
I like the tassels on this one.
I suddenly feel very stressed now.This term we have to use Macromedia Flash and Autodesk Maya.And I remember that I am not that good at computers.Even last time Photoshop and Illustrator were difficult for me.Then I wonder why I went into animation in the first place,especially since got the word '3D' in front.
3D animation
requires a lot of computers.
but anyway,i think i was too tired in flash animation class the other day and didn't understand much about how to control it.So i think I have to join group 1 again on Monday and study one more time.
~~~~~~~

But even since last time I was not sure about which to take,animation or illustration.I think truthfully I'm more interested in illustration.Even now I think of freelancing as an illustrator after I graduate.I think since I was young also I've always wanted to be an illustrator.But how come in the end I went into animation anyway? Because of money only.Because i heard that there is a shortage of animators and an oversupply of illustrators,therefore animators get jobs easier.For the same reason,animators get better salaries as well.

sigh...but I still feel like something is missing in my animation.You know how you can feel if something is going well or not?Eventhough my grades are ok,but I don't feel like a natural animator.Natural illustrator,then probably.

Sure,I like to tell stories, I like to draw.

But separately.

Since I was young I liked to write stories,draw illustrations,draw comics,and then I usually get praises for them.That's why I probably will prefer illustrating stories,rather than animating.I just feel out of my element.Maybe the feeling will change later,i dunno.But that's how I feel now anyway.The other day I read an interview of one of the animators at Pixar,who said the same thing.She studied graphic design in college,but later went into animation.At first she didn't like it,she always felt more of an illustration person,like to do those small drawing details and all.But in the end also she turned out ok in animation.Hopefully it'll be something like that for me later also.

At least I feel a bit better after hearing what Yip Sun said,he said that the lecturers told him,if he's confident of his drawing abilities,then go for something more challenging and do animation.I think I just have to keep on remembering that after all this,at least I'm preparing myself better for working life and not going to paint myself into a corner and become a starving artist.

This is my current desktop image.Prolly the best characters in Mirror Mask,the orbiting giants.Besides the Griffon.And Valentine.And the various monkeybirds.

Also...this looks interesting.The next time i go to Borders I'll check it out.Pretty sure they would have it.Daym...Dave McKean's art makes me wonder why most comics have almost the same look.And they don't teach this stuff to the Illustration major people either,if I'm not mistaken.
This too.I know,people have been talking about Sandman since like last century,and I haven't read it before.
As you've prolly guessed by now,yes,I'm still fangirling over Neil Gaiman/Dave McKean.*coughsobuytheirstuffformecough*

End of post.

The party post

Sohs yesterday we had a family gathering at my condominium.Cos one of my Aussie aunties was on the way back from an international medical society meeting thingummy in a country which I forgot and decided to stop in Malaysia a few days before going back to Adelaide.

Then hor,I dunno why this time everyone so bersemangat make so much food.My mom boiled 2 pots of rice,then my cousin made 2 packets of spaghetti and an aunt had a platter of mantao also.In the end the rice and the spagetti were still more that 2/3rds left.Somemore before that my mom was wondering if we have enough food or not.But the hero of the day was still my jee yee,she made a container of kuih bingka,a container of pineapple tarts,a tin of prawn crackers and a pot of curry fish.Keng leh...her excuse for the tarts was that the pineapple was cheap and she had a lot of leftover butter at home.Needless to say,she bakes a lot.Sometimes she sells biscuits and jam back in Melaka.In the end we had a lot of leftover food,made me imagine packing the whole lot off to Burma or China or something.Could still feed a small village.As usual we resorted to dividing the food amongst our families.That's food for a few meals right there.

Also,one of my cousins brought his baby boy along.5 months old i think.Damn cute.When he first saw the crowd gathered at my place he opened his eyes big big .Can practically hear him thinking *gaspwhosthiswhosthiswhosthis*.Quite an inquisitive looking kid.My aunts were all happily torturing him by carrying him to the table where all the food was so that he can smell the food better,and try to tempt him with glasses of juice.And the kid would always try to grab at the glass of juice.Poor thing lah,some people still cannot eat funny funny stuff mah.

Mirror Mask

OMG...you guys really MUST watch this movie!!!
It's prolly one of the most or the most imaginative films I've seen so far.

They had a perfect combination of talents going on there,Neil Gaiman's genius writing, Dave McKean's fantastic surreal photomontages, and the jazz music and the cast are good too.Listen to the dialogue,it's very good,witty,fun,balances the mostly dark visuals,since the darkness might make some people bored after awhile.The way the actors intone the script helped very much,especially the character of Valentine.As for the visuals,it's really very interesting,there's nothing else like it.It's just very sad that the film has a limited release in US and Australia only,maybe because the style was concidered too artsy.But the overall feeling of the movie is very unique,brings out the theme of teenage-parent angst very well,using a halucinating/dream-like environment,sort of like when you are falling asleep and nothing makes sense but at the time the nonsense mirrors your real life.

Trial,trial

Dun have to read this post,it's the same as the last one.Just taking my Japanese for a test drive.Gave up halfway though...

〜〜〜〜〜〜〜

And from here onwards I'm too lazy to continue.

So the holidays are over.3 weeks are really not enough.Feels the same length as 1 week of college.So what have I been up to during the holidays? Didn't go out much except for movie marathon at Yilyn's place and Midvalley to see the college exhibition.Didn't do much art,felt quite lazy,prolly because I need a break from art for awhile.Haven't even managed to finish my art exchanges and my sculpture.

On the other hand,I've been studying a lot of Japanese and came to know what I didn't even know that I didn't know.Currently I'm in the middle of Intermediate level.Letsee if I can spare some time during college term to study the rest.Must practice what I know though,if not sure forget again.Playing with the idea of translating my blog entries...

Also,I've been watching a lot of movies,mostly old ones,on Youtube.First I watched 'Return to Oz',then 'Neverending Story' followed by some random fairytale puppetry stuff my Jim Henson.From there I linked to 'Mirror Mask', also by Jim Henderson.I'm at part 3 of 20 now,so far it looks good,also a lot like Bridge to Terabithia.BTW, the movie storyline was written by Neil Gaiman,who also wrote Sandman and Stardust.I think I see a pattern now= childhood imagination.I think it's fascinating,right,anything is possible.I used to write a lot of short stories when I was a kid also,reading them again is quite fun.Also,I'm currently reading Alice in Wonderland.Cannot believe that I haven't read that before.I was wikipedia-ing that book,and it turns out that Alice in Wonderland is written in a genre called nonsense writing.Sounds insulting,but actually it's a proper name for a genre.It's a genre about writing that is purposely not making any sense and uses a lot of wordplay.

Oh well then,happy studying,people.

Youtube is not loading.

Ah nostalgia

"Return to Oz".

I was compiling a list of animations when I remembered this live action film from my childhood.I didn't realise that it was by Disney also.I think it's quite unknown,but it's interesting to see all that old school special effects and the strange charm.Actually,since the movie was made in 1985,the special effects were quite advanced for it's time.Link out to see the rest of the film,it gets better later.Somehow it has the same kind of feeling as Tim Burton plus Alice in Wonderland and Bridge to Terabithia.I think the best part is the designs of Princess Mombi and her palace,and the Wheelers,which was taken from a book called Ozma of Oz.I used to be a bit scared of this movie when I was a kid,but now i think it's very unique.It's a pity that the 'slightly scary' elements made this show a PG rated show and put off more people from watching it,since the design is genius in my opinion.We need more of this kind of stuff nowadays,not the 'get rich easily' scheme that many producers are doing.

Meanwhile,i'm compiling a list of animations by Disney, Pixar, Don Bluth,Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki.Any more to add?

the fashionista post

Gah!! Fashion!!!!

this one is actually an artwork,not wearable fashion.Zips are getting sexier and sexier nowadays don't you think so?

Lol...Mao Zhedong...HK humour
Japan Fashion Week!!!

Wah...guys who wear traditional clothes in a modern way are hot.Admit it.Including those modern sarongs.
This designer is cool.I like the surreal Alice in Wonderland/carnival/druggie /mysterious feel.

I like that jacket.Gasp...and now you know I have a fetish for oversized jackets.
White and black,with loud shoes.
Very geometrical and structures dress.lol...
This designer went for all black designs.Waahhh....classic elegance and masculinity.

More towards street fashion,but I seem to like mixtures of a lot of fabrics.Accept I still feel pain when I see animal fur...
This one reminds me of Mr Sunny Day, my mad scientist in a yellow lab coat.
Gothic like look.
There's that multi fabric look again.

lol at the hairstyle...

OK,this is the part when I start griping

Gaaahhh!!! I wanna go shopping,people!!! I need a shopping buddy,any volunteers??That's the problem when you have a mother who doesn't care 2 hoots about appearances and sisters who are not in the country...Actually before term break I was thinking I want to give myself a real makeover,clothes,makeup,shoes,everything.And then I realise I'm out of cash and still need to buy more expensive art materials.

I have a sudden urge to learn makeup,like Zhi Ni, or at least go up to one of those makeup counters and ask for advise.But those counter people are very intimidating!!!Sorry lah,but makeup is actually very important for modern women, even the guy who came to talk about job interviews said so.

And you know how I am,I like to experiment with fashion,but then again I tak sanggup to buy a lot of makeup materials,in case it doesn't work out and I end up wasting my money.But i want to try out dramatic makeup,all those fake eyelashes and advertorial fashion shoot eyeshadow stuff plus add in Bill Kaulitz and Visual Kei stuff and all.ahahahaha...I'm very vain one,but let's call it artistic because it sounds better.OMGosh...guys nowadays can do makeup better than me ok,that's not acceptable...

Where to shop though...Parade is nearest but not much variaty.Summit has a lot of lala shops that sell cheap clothes but not guaranteed can find anything worthwhile.Might be interesting tho.Pyramid??maybe...Times Square? I heard they sell a lot of nice accessories,but also very lala. One Utama(that would include Curve and Centrepoint by default,and Ikea since we're at it)? i feel like going,but very far and very crowded.But they have super a lot of shops and got Shu Uemura,and Shu Uemura has the most seme-fied lash bar.Ahahahaha...I think I'm going crazy raving about fashion...

End of griping.

It's very hot

and I don't feel like doing anything,so I'm lepaking online.

Seems that I share my birthday with:

1844 - Henry Heinz, American food manufacturer (d. 1916)
1905 - Fred Trump, American real estate developer, father of Donald Trump (d. 1999)
1961 - Neil Buchanan, English television presenter
1962 - Joan Cusack, American actress
1973 - Takeshi Kaneshiro, actor/model
1976 - Emily Deschanel, American actress
1989 - Michelle Wie, American golfer

Also,on that date,the people who died:
1531 - Huldrych Zwingli, Swiss Protestant leader (b. 1484)

this one made me laugh though...
2006 - Benito Martínez, Cuban who claimed to be the oldest person, died mildly ironically. Family didn't mourn - mostly dead also. (b. ?1880)

As for holidays and occasions,we have:

The Fugly post

Yesterday I was procrastinating about painting my art exchanges and decided to redraw some of my old characters from 3 years ago.Pretty fun stuff.Those were the days when I was very free and could draw whenever I damn well wanted to.I remember when I was in form 1 or 2 I made a very long winded comic about the first few characters called 'Lupus' which was about a gentle  werewolf accused of murder.I managed to do 2 stacks of comic without even thinking up a solid storyline.Also,back in those days Harry Potter was all the rage,and guess what,my characters were students in Hogwarts.Lame leh...I surprise myself sometimes.

~~~~~~
Character #1:Alan.
Tall and athletic Aussie beach bum Alan with blonde spikey hair.Most famous member of the school archery team (nicknamed the Cupid Club because of Valentines favours they do to get funds).Has an outgoing personality, many rabid fangirls and an eyebrow piercing.Additionally, has a very much younger brother who's interested in nature,his name is Gareth.Has an elder brother who is a famous band member as well,I think his name was Harold.Later on,when I was thinking about remaking the comic, Alan's area of speciality in magic was supposed to be Sanubari,which is mind reading, mind and emotion control.
Not bad leh...all that from memory alone.
before:
after:
Too much surfing when he goes back to Australia equals a bad sunburn,freckles and hair getting more and more damaged due to the sun,pool water bleach and Brylcream.
~~~~~~~
Character #2:Dermot

The short Irish boy with black hair and a thick white streak on his left fringe.Best friend material as he is the one who defends the werewolf guy whenever anyone makes fun of him or accuses him.Laidback personality,but don't piss him off,he knows Karate.Member of the school quidditch team*slaps forehead* playing beater.But either ways he's prooly my favourite character of the lot.I don't think I will be continuing Lupus,but I might be using Dermot's character for another comic,along with his younger brother Daniel.Speciality in the remake was Samudera,which is control over water.

after:
~~~~~~~
Character #3:Eros
OMG...that name was so random.Here's an article about the real Eros. I solemnly swear to think of better names next time.I think the name came from Eros Ramazotti,I salute his mom.
Anyways,Eros is the werewolf guy in question,who lives as an orphan since he was 6 due to a wolf attack.Very fair with white blonde hair and a withdrawn personality.Speciality in the remake was Bahang,or control of fires.
after:
~~~~~~~
Character#4:

Edward,the head student with ego problems.Very serious and excels in almost everything he does.Suspicious of Eros' background and often treats him unfairly,even more so when he is jealous of Eros's quidditch talent.Most people think that he is very cold,but his best friend is actually Alan.Polar opposites,but the get along fine.

after:
~~~~~~
Next up,some assorted characters.
Character #5 and 6:Joey and Christoph
My mascots for Caffein workshoppe.Caffein workshoppe was a crash art project I had during school breaks.Joey and Christoph were of course sort of like my alter egos,the artistic twins.
before:
ok,fine,I only have chibi versions here.
after:
Joey.Represents the person I'd want to be,super artistic, outgoing, self reliable,friendly and beautiful.
Christoph.The twin brother that I would like to have.Reliable, supportive and mature.The twins dress exactly the same down to the earrings ;except for the monocle.OKlah,can sort of notice the quality of drawing suddenly dropped,that was because by then I was very tired already,drawing 7 characters in one shot, at night somemore.
~~~~~~
Character#7:

Sky.Not a very developed character,but one I remember well either ways.The vocalist of a band called Freestyle.Electric blue hair and green eyes,plus baby face.There are supposed to be a guitarist and a drummer but I forgot their names already.

before:
after:
Kind of liked this pose tho.He and his emo pierrot makeup
